Day of Suicide Prevention at the University Hospital Magdeburg
The event aims to provide all participants with the knowledge to recognize suicidal risk early and offer professional help to those affected.
On October 17 and 18, 2024, the University Hospital Magdeburg invites you to the Day of Suicide Prevention. The event is organized by the Clinical Ethics Committee in cooperation with the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, the Social Service of the University Hospital, and the Robert Enke Foundation.
A suicide ends a life and often leaves relatives in shock, despair, and self-blame. Sometimes the risk was known, but often the suicide happened unexpectedly. Ignorance about therapy options and feared stigmatization lead those affected to hide their dark thoughts. Annually, around 10,000 people die by suicide in Germany, which is more than the total number of deaths caused by traffic accidents, violence, and drugs combined. The causes range from mental illnesses to life crises. But suicide prevention is possible, and everyone can learn to recognize warning signs and provide help.
On October 17, 2024, Prof. Dr. Thomas Nickl-Jockschat, Director of the University Hospital for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, will give a lecture titled "Recognizing and Addressing Suicide Risk" at the Central Lecture Hall (Building 22), Leipziger Str. 44, 39120 Magdeburg, at 5:00 PM. Subsequently, a panel discussion will take place with Prof. Dr. Florian Junne, Director of the University Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, affected individuals, relatives, and staff of the telephone counseling service. The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Bettina Hitzer, Chair of the Clinical Ethics Committee. Participation is free of charge, no registration is required.
On October 18, 2024, the Robert Enke Foundation will offer a virtual tour through the psyche of a person suffering from depression at the DZNE (Building 64), Leipziger Str. 44, 39120 Magdeburg. The VR experience "Impression Depression" takes place hourly from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and is not suitable for individuals with mental illnesses; registration is required. In parallel, interested parties can visit various information booths on support services and participate in a mindfulness workshop.
