Family information day ‘Active against cancer’ on 9 November in the Johanniskirche Magdeburg
On Saturday, 9 November 2024, the Tumor Center Magdeburg/Saxony-Anhalt e.V. is organising the family information day ‘Active against cancer’ in the Johanniskirche Magdeburg for the 24th time. Tino Sorge, Member of the Bundestag for the constituency of Magdeburg and health policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, is the patron of this event. From 10:00 to 13:00, visitors can once again expect a varied programme with presentations and information stands. A special highlight this year will be an oversized model of the intestine, which will vividly explain, among other things, cancers of this organ. Registration for the event is not required and admission is free.
Host Prof. Dr Dimitrios Mougiakakos, Chairman of the Tumour Centre and Director of the Magdeburg University Clinic for Haematology, Oncology and Cell Therapy, cordially invites you: "This year, too, there will be an extensive programme and numerous opportunities for direct questions to the experts. We invite visitors to find out about cancer prevention options and the latest findings on the treatment options for various cancers." In line with the words of welcome from the patron, Tino Sorge, MP, the traditional information day pursues the goal: ‘Let us [...] work together to ensure that the support and counselling services are further expanded - and that no patient is left alone.’

After the opening and welcome by the host and patron, the programme starts at 10:15 a.m. with the ‘Health adventure - Don't give cancer a chance!’, which is aimed at children and young people. The programme will provide information on the prevention and early detection of skin cancer, addiction and cancer prevention with a focus on smoking (including an interview with a lung cancer patient), alcohol, nutrition and cancer as well as the HPV vaccination.
Following a presentation, questions or concerns of affected patients regarding participation in clinical trials will be discussed. Another focus is the forum ‘Modern cancer medicine in Saxony-Anhalt’. The importance of oncological centres for the care of cancer patients, the latest standards in diagnostics and therapy in colorectal cancer centres and stereotactic radiotherapy will be discussed.
At the same time, further lectures will be held in the seminar room on the 2nd floor, for example on the topics of psycho-oncology, palliative medicine or cancers of the lung, blood, breast or prostate.
In the nave, there are numerous information stands on various topics relating to cancer and its prevention. Visitors can have their blood checked for blood cells, have the lymph nodes in their neck examined by ultrasound or have a lung function test carried out. There will also be valuable tips on skin cancer prevention, skin cancer in general and skin care. Cancers in both women and men are also discussed in detail. There is also information on stem cell donation and the opportunity to be typed as a donor.
Nutritional tips will be given on proper nutrition during and after cancer, which visitors will also be able to experience directly with samples. Other stands will provide information on rehabilitation in oncology and on epithesis and lymphatic care. Hospice and palliative care will also be explained in detail at one stand. Anyone with questions about hair replacement can also get advice. There will also be information on cancer treatment using radiotherapy.
Cancer counselling centres and self-help groups will also offer support and introduce themselves. The topic of ‘Exercise, sport and cancer’ will also be highlighted. Finally, the oncology centres and the clinical cancer registry will provide insights into their tasks and services.
