Help for families with mentally ill parents

10.11.2022 -

Children and adolescents with mentally ill parents often show little concern and anxiety. However, they have a multiple increased risk of developing a mental illness themselves. The University Clinics of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatic Medicine for Adults and Children and Adolescents at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg form one of 19 specialized centers within the framework of the Germany-wide project network CHIMPS-NET (Children of mentally ill parents - network). The network has the common goal of improving the situation of affected children and adolescents through new needs-oriented care services. To do so, a scientific study is being carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and quality of the vier Versorgungsformen CHIMPS-P, CHIMPS-MFT, CHIMPS-T und i-CHIMPS for the treatment of children and adolescents with mentally ill parents with a view to integration into standard care. If proven successful, the new forms of care are to be integrated into standard care nationwide.. More participating families are still being sought until March 31, 2023!

The project is aimed at families with at least one mentally ill or addicted parent and at least one child between the ages of 3 and 18. Single parents or ill parents who are not currently undergoing psychiatric treatment can also participate. The child/children should live in the parents' household or have regular contact (at least every 14 days) with the ill parent.Familie - © sewcream - stock.adobe

All families are first asked to attend an initial interview, where information about the study process is provided and questions can be answered. If the families decide to participate, all interested family members will receive comprehensive diagnostics. After feedback of the results, family therapeutic or preventive talks are offered at the University Hospital for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Magdeburg.
