Online lecture

11.11.2024 -

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and as part of the lecture series ‘Body and Gender in Interdisciplinary Perspective’, an online lecture on ‘Anatomical Reconstruction after FGM/C - A Healing Intervention for Victims of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting’ will take place on 25 November 2024 .

Around 200 million women and girls in over 30 countries worldwide are affected by female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). In Germany, too, the number of women and girls affected and at risk has risen in recent years. Against this background, the Office for Gender Equality and Family at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, in cooperation with Prof. Bettina Hitzer from the Department of History, Ethics and Theory of Medicine (GET) at the Faculty of Medicine, invites you to an online lecture by Dr Dan mon O'Dey, an internationally recognised specialist in reconstructive surgery who has developed a globally unique surgical method to help the victims of FGM.

In the lecture, Dr O'Dey will provide insights into the possibilities of anatomical and functional reconstruction after female genital mutilation (FGM/C). He will explain how reconstructive surgery can help affected women to experience physical and emotional healing and regain a self-determined life. The lecture is aimed at professionals from the fields of medicine, psychology, social work and counselling who work with FGM/C victims or are interested in the topic, as well as anyone who wants to set an example against gender-based violence and is committed to women's rights and health.
