Successful premiere in Magdeburg
On 19 and 20 October 2024 , the 1st AGA East Student Course took place at the Orthopaedic University Hospital Magdeburg, organised by AGA students from the universities of Berlin, Brandenburg, Dresden, Leipzig and Magdeburg. The AGA - Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery offers medical students the opportunity for extramural training through various events such as this course. The course covered essential aspects of clinical joint examination and arthroscopy, allowing participants to gain valuable initial experience in orthopaedics and trauma surgery.

Under the medical direction of Dr Martin Röpke, specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery at Magdeburg Orthopaedic University Hospital, and organised by Magdeburg students Lena Göhler, Mikaeil Bakhshi and Jana Johanshon, the prospective doctors were not only taught theoretical content, but also offered practical exercises. After an ‘online pre-course’ with four lectures on important topics such as the clinical diagnosis of knee injuries, the course started with a practice-oriented day in the outpatient clinic of the university hospital.
The participants went through various stations on the topic of the knee, including functional anatomy, clinical examination techniques and sonography, under the guidance of experienced lecturers. Particular highlights were the practical introduction to arthroscopy and the various suturing techniques using teaching models.

On the second day, the focus was on shoulder diagnostics, including anatomical refresher courses, clinical tests and practical exercises on the placement of portals and arthroscopic treatment of shoulder injuries. A lunchtime symposium on artificial intelligence in orthopaedics rounded off the programme.

The event ended with a quiz battle to consolidate the knowledge learnt. Many thanks to all lecturers, organisers and supporters, especially the Orthopaedic University Hospital Magdeburg and the companies Arthrex and OPED, who made the successful implementation possible. The AGA students plan to continue the successful collaboration and offer such a course annually in future to further promote interest in orthopaedic surgery among students.
