UMMD's new Pulmonary Center Begins Operations

17.06.2022 -

Another major project was realized at Magdeburg University Hospital. The University Department of Pneumology and the University Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery (thoracic surgery unit) moved into the new ward block 60e and started operations on June 13. Together, the two clinics represent university pulmonary medicine and continue to ensure holistic as well as highly specialized patient care.

The aim of the move to one building is to enable the expansion of treatment capacities. With the commissioning of the new premises, existing treatment and coordination processes will be bundled and optimized. For many years, there has been an increase in the number of patients with bronchial carcinoma and other lung diseases at the University Medical Center.

"One advantage of the Lung Center is the specialist internal and surgical care of patients with lung diseases under one roof. At the same time, there is a close spatial connection to numerous specialist medical clinics such as cardiology, cardiac surgery and intensive care medicine, as well as to the emergency room," says Prof. Dr. Jens Schreiber, Director of the University Department of Pneumology.

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Walles, Chief of Thoracic Surgery, adds: "With the relocation of the University Lung Center to the new hospital building Haus 60e, we have taken the opportunity to become the first organ center on the campus of the University Medical Center in which the treatment processes are also structurally interwoven. This creates better treatment conditions for patients and also for our employees."

"I am very pleased about the establishment of the Lung Center on the campus of the University Medical Center. This is a milestone on the way to our desired scientific profile, Precision Medicine: Intervention and Prevention (P:IP). We are pooling our expertise and our interdisciplinary collaboration with the aim of offering our patients the best possible care," emphasizes Prof. Hans-Jochen Heinze, Medical Director of Magdeburg University Hospital.

Regarding the delayed move-in to House 60e, Prof. Thorsten Walles, MD, said the date was originally scheduled for December 2021, but that both the Corona pandemic and disrupted supply chains had delayed construction progress. "We then used the additional time for numerous coordination processes that such a large project as a new clinic building entails."

In May 2020, the Finance Committee of the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt had decided that a new hospital building would be constructed on the grounds of Magdeburg University Medical Center. In October 2020, construction of a new ward block began on the grounds of Magdeburg University Hospital. This will create the necessary alternative capacity for the upcoming renovation and new construction at Magdeburg University Hospital.
