Specialization Training (Facharztausbildung) or Employment
Information on specialization training (Facharztausbildung) or employment
Studies of Human Medicine end in Germany with the State Exam. All further education is offered directly in the hospital departments. The Facharztausbildung (medical specialization training) which follows usually the State Exam takes between 4-6 years. Spezialisation is only possible with very high German proficiency.
For foreign graduates it is only possible to be admitted to the Facharztausbildung or to be employed as a physician after having obtained the following documents:
- Permission to practise as a physician called "Erlaubnis zur vorübergehenden Ausübung des ärztlichen Berufes" or "Approbation" both of which you have to apply for at the Landesverwaltungsamt
- A work permit (Arbeitsgenehmigung) by the Agentur für Arbeit
- A residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) which you apply for at the Ausländerbehörde

You should count several months for this bureaucratic procedure. Citizens of EU-member states usually encounter no problems.
However, it is impossible to obtain these documents without proof of very good German knowledge. A more detailed despription of how to apply is available on our website only in German. If you are not able to understand the German explanations you will not be eligible for the above mentioned documents. In order to apply for the above mentioned documents you need to provide proof of German knowledge at the B2 level which cannot be older than five years. Please be aware: While your application with the Landesverwaltungsamt runs, you will have to do another German test with the Landesärztekammer Sachsen-Anhalt. You will find further information and an application form here: http://www.aeksa.de/www/website/PublicNavigation/arzt/mitgliedschaft/sprachtest/.
Only few vacancies are available for Spezialization. The chance of being offered a payed training vacancy is low. Excellent study records and proof of scientific interest as well as high level German proficiency are therefore prerequisites for your application.
For the procedure of applying at our clinic please see our German page "Facharztausbildung".
