The study of human medicine

The medical school in Magdeburg is implementing the licence to practice medicine as of 27.6.2002 in its entirety. As the largest hospital in the northerly Saxony-Anhalt, it guarantees good conditions for a practical, patient-orientated medical education. This includes an integrated case and problem-based style of teaching as well as systematic transfer of knowledge and personal study.

Of particular interest to the student education is the well-maintained interdisciplinary research carried out jointly by clinics and institutes. Alongside large-scale projects, multifaceted individual research tasks are worked upon in the separate facilities, providing a good starting point for students studying for a doctoral thesis.

Through a series of exchange programmes with partner institutions abroad, the possibility of studying or researching in Europe or America has been created. Students have great opportunities - partially supported by scholarship programmes - to successfully complete study visits in the USA, Mexico, Chile, France, Austria, Lithuania, the Netherlands or Turkey over several months.

Numerous new appeals by university lecturers from all four corners of Germany identify the medical faculty as an attractive site for teaching and research. Particular importance is attached to a close cooperation between students and lecturers. Due to the relatively small number of students, this is very advantageous. Around 185 students are enrolled each year. In the event of recurring problems, one-on-one meetings with individual lecturers can be arranged. With its compact seminar groups, the Studies Organisation guarantees course and medical practice plans for every medical student and complies with the normal course duration. A very active board of student representatives campaigns for student issues.

The affiliated campus in the south of the Saxony-Anhalt state capital is of great benefit, with 25 clinics and 24 institutions. Only the gynaecological clinic is situated externally. A student hall of residence is located directly on the campus.
