  • What: 33rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Thoracic Surgery
  • When: 18 to 20 September 2024
  • Where: Magdeburg exhibition halls, Tessenowstraße 9a, 39114 Magdeburg

The central topics of this year's congress are the rapid advances in robotic surgery and the increasing importance of thoracic surgery in the treatment of chest injuries. A particular focus will be on the structural changes in the hospital landscape due to current political reforms. In this context, the cooperation between Magdeburg University Hospital and the Pfeiffersche Stiftungen with the Lostau Lung Clinic, in which Magdeburg University Hospital has held a 25.5 per cent stake since 2024, is regarded as a nationwide showcase model. This collaboration enables integrated care in the areas of thoracic surgery, pneumology and weaning. (ventilation weaning).

Professor Walles is looking forward to the exchange and explains: ‘Our annual conference offers an excellent platform to discuss the latest technical developments and structural challenges in thoracic surgery. The progress we are experiencing in operating theatres and clinics presents us with challenges that we can only overcome together.’

In addition to the scientific lectures and symposia, the congress offers practical hands-on workshops and a specialist nursing conference for medical assistants and nursing staff. A special workshop is aimed at young students in order to involve the next generation in thoracic surgery topics at an early stage.
