Magdeburg University Medical Centre becomes a certified centre of the German Hypertension League

07.08.2025 -

Magdeburg University Medical Centre (UMMD) is now an officially certified centre of the German Hypertension League (DHL®) – German Society for Hypertension and Prevention.

With this distinction, UMMD now belongs to a nationwide network of selected medical institutions that are distinguished by their special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure. The certificate underscores the high quality and commitment of UMMD in the care of patients with hypertension (high blood pressure).

The certification is a seal of quality for the highest medical standards in the care of patients with arterial hypertension. High blood pressure is the most common chronic disease worldwide. At the same time, the certification underscores the UMMD's commitment to prevention, modern therapeutic approaches and interdisciplinary cooperation.

‘High blood pressure is a key risk factor for heart attack, stroke and kidney disease, but it is still often detected too late or treated inadequately,’ explains Prof. Dr. Peter R. Mertens, Head of the University Clinic for Kidney and Hypertension Diseases, Diabetology and Endocrinology in Magdeburg. ‘With our certification as a DHL centre, we are confirming our special expertise in this field.’

The certified centre uses modern diagnostic procedures, individual therapy plans and comprehensive educational services. Close cooperation with general practitioners, cardiologists, nephrologists and specialists in nursing and nutritional counselling ensures holistic care.

Certification strengthens educational work

The award from the German Hypertension League (Deutsche Hochdruckliga e. V.) is not only a sign of medical quality, but also a call for greater awareness of high blood pressure among the population. Magdeburg University Hospital is planning information events and preventive care services for citizens in this context. ‘The treatment and management of high blood pressure should encompass all aspects, from lifestyle changes such as physical exercise and a healthy diet to medication,’ explains Prof. Mertens.
