Magdeburg University Hospital once again awarded gold certificate by the “Clean Hands Campaign”
The University Hospital Magdeburg has once again been awarded gold status by the “Clean Hands Campaign” in hand hygiene recertification for 2026 and 2027. Of the 44 hospitals in Saxony-Anhalt, only five were awarded this gold certificate, confirming the high hygiene standards at the University Hospital Magdeburg.
Gold certification in recognition of exemplary measures
In line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the “Clean Hands Campaign” is committed to sustainable quality assurance and improved hygiene standards for hand hygiene in medical facilities. The University Hospital Magdeburg has been actively involved in the initiative since its inception in 2008.
A central element of the campaign is direct observation of hand-disinfection behavior in everyday ward life. Employees of the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene carry out unobtrusive observations of medical and nursing staff and document whether hand disinfection is performed at the appropriate times – for example, before and after patient contact. The results are evaluated by a professional group and reported back to the respective wards.
Since 2018, hygiene specialists at Magdeburg University Hospital have conducted over 20,000 individual observations of proper hand disinfection among nursing staff and doctors. If areas for improvement are identified, targeted training measures are implemented.
Dr. Lukas Bechmann, Head of Hospital Hygiene at Magdeburg University Hospital, explains:
"Consistent hand hygiene is one of the most effective measures for protecting patients from preventable infections. It is an expression of responsibility, professionalism, and respect for the people who place their trust in us. The fact that we have once again been awarded the Gold Certificate underscores the great importance of this issue in our hospital. The award recognizes the ongoing commitment of our employees and at the same time sends a strong signal for quality and patient safety."
