Check presentation to eighteen-year-old Cosima
An emotional moment at Magdeburg University Orthopedic Clinic
In a moving ceremony on September 29 at the Orthopedic University Hospital in Magdeburg, a symbolic check was presented to Cosima Herrmann, who had celebrated her 18th birthday the day before. The presentation was in memory of Cosima's mother, who died in a tragic accident on July 4, 2010, when Cosima was just two years old.
A charity match with heart
The event began with a warm welcome from Prof. Lohmann, who introduced those present, including former colleagues of Cosima's mother, the then nursing service manager Angela Stendel, and Fabian van Olphen, the former captain of SC Magdeburg (SCM). “I am very happy that you, dear Cosima, are here today,” Prof. Lohmann began. “Nurse Yvonne invited you and told you that it would be a surprise in memory of your mother.” After the accident in July 2010, the team at the Orthopedic Clinic met to discuss how they could support Cosima's future. The idea of a charity handball match was born. Thanks to the support of Fermersleber SV, where nurse Stefan was active, and the SCM Bundesliga team, which received medical care from the clinic, the match was organized. “It was great how quickly and selflessly the SCM agreed,” Lohmann recalled. Fabian van Olphen, then captain of SCM, brought the team into the game with full commitment – pro bono and with a lot of heart.

Savings for the future
The proceeds from the charity match, amounting to €4,900, were managed in trust by Lohmann. With a smile, he recounted an anecdote: “One day, my wife asked me why I had set up a savings account for a child named Cosima – the bank had sent the mail to my home address. Fortunately, I was able to clear up the misunderstanding!” Those present laughed heartily. Now, 15 years later, the moment had come to hand over the savings to Cosima. Sister Yvonne presented the symbolic check, which will be made out to Cosima on Monday afternoon. “This money is intended to give you a small start for your future – in memory of your mother,” emphasized Prof. Lohmann.
Cosima: A successful handball player
It is particularly noteworthy that Cosima herself is active in professional handball. The 18-year-old lives in Frankfurt (Oder) and plays in the third division – a fact that makes the connection to the charity match from back then even more special. “It's impressive how you are following your path,” praised Prof. Lohmann.
A sign of community
Fabian van Olphen, representing SCM, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “It was an honor for us to help back then, and it's wonderful to see Cosima standing here today.” The current SCM coach Bennet Wiegert, who was still a player on the team at the time, also sent his warm regards, as he was unable to attend due to the Club World Cup. The meeting was an emotional moment that demonstrated the solidarity between the clinic, SCM, and the handball community. With the check in her hands and a smile on her face, Cosima expressed her gratitude for the support and the memory of her mother.
