Strengthening confidence in responding to terrorist attacks and disaster situations

25.11.2025 -

On the initiative of IPHAM, a TDSC® course organized by the Academy of Trauma Surgery (AUC) took place for the fourth time in Magdeburg on November 15-16, 2025.

TDSC stands for Terror and Disaster Surgical Care, and the course concept focuses in particular on the characteristics and special features of terrorist situations involving a mass casualty incident (TerrorMANV). This topic has been highly relevant and increasingly important, not only since the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market.

Participants trained in areas such as in-hospital triage in highly dynamic situations, the surgical treatment principles of damage control surgery (DCS), and, at an advanced level, tactical abbreviated surgical care (TASC).

In addition to highly experienced surgeons and emergency physicians, the course instructor team also included military colleagues from the German Armed Forces and the German Armed Forces Medical Service, who contributed their many years of practical experience.

A key aspect of the course was to provide experienced physicians at the specialist level who assume organizational and surgical responsibility in their clinics—in the emergency room, in the operating room, in the intensive care unit, in the emergency medical services, and in crisis teams—with decision-making aids and practical tools to improve their confidence in critical situations.

The course participants were very impressed by the quality of the lectures and the excellent case simulations based on table-top exercises.

The IPHAM plans to hold a series of further courses in 2026 in cooperation with the AUC at its own premises in the Elbe Office at the Science Harbor.
