Trainees at the University Hospital are building their resilience
The University Hospital of Magdeburg accepts approximately 230 trainees each year. The three-year training program is a major challenge for the trainees. Especially at the beginning of the program, they must adapt to a new life situation in both their personal and professional lives and become aware of the responsibilities associated with their chosen profession, such as registered nurse, medical technologist, or surgical or anesthesiology technician.
For the trainees, developing their professional competencies involves not only acquiring specialized knowledge and practical skills but also reflecting on and developing their own professional role. In order to provide long-term support to people in crisis situations, it is particularly important to know and utilize one’s own resources and thereby strengthen resilience—the ability to maintain balance under stress.

The University Medical Center places great importance on supporting its trainees in overcoming the new challenges associated with their training—both in the classroom and in clinical practice—and in recognizing the importance of mental health in their professional lives.
To this end, competent partners were sought. Thanks to the financial support of AOK Saxony-Anhalt, 10 resilience training sessions can be held annually for all UKMD trainees. In 1.5-day seminars, the classes receive intensive training from instructors at the Magdeburg Health Academy in methods and strategies for overcoming challenges in a professional context.
Here are some comments from trainees after the training:
“It was varied, creative, helpful…”
“The relaxation exercises were great”
“Our class dynamics were strengthened”
“It was fun”
“I learned a lot about stress management”
“Thank you very much for the opportunity to receive resilience training”
Thanks to the collaborative partnership between AOK Saxony-Anhalt, GesundheitsAkademie, and the Training Center for Healthcare Professions at Magdeburg University Hospital, new ideas for promoting the health of trainees are constantly emerging. The shared goal is to support young people in reducing their daily stress levels and strengthening the resources that benefit their personal lifestyle and health.
It is important that trainees integrate their insights on health promotion into their daily lives over the long term. Following the professional training provided by the Health Academy, the topics are regularly explored in greater depth during classes. This year, for the first time, a reflection session guided by key questions will take place as part of the curriculum 3–6 months after the training.
A scientific evaluation of the effects of the resilience training is planned for the coming year as part of a bachelor’s thesis. We also hope to determine whether there is a demonstrable link between the reduction in the dropout rate during training and our training programs designed to strengthen our trainees’ resilience.
