Post-COVID: Study investigates the impact of endurance training

27.11.2023 -

Magdeburg University Hospital is seeking participants for a study on the effectiveness of endurance training in people with post-COVID.

A new study by the University Hospitals for Cardiology and Angiology and for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy in Magdeburg aims to clarify whether regular endurance training is beneficial for patients with post-COVID. The study is looking for participants who have already had COVID-19 and are currently suffering from exhaustion. The scientists hope that the study will provide new insights to further improve current therapies and thus also the quality of life of people suffering from the long-term effects of COVID-19.

The scientists are investigating three specific questions as part of the study: Does regular endurance training improve quality of life, does it make those affected less exhausted, and what type of training is particularly beneficial? Sports physician Dörte Ahrens is leading the study and explains: ‘So far, there is little solid evidence about possible successful treatment strategies for long COVID and post-COVID syndrome. Our goal is also to give affected patients a perspective so that they do not feel alone.’

Participants in the study will be asked to independently complete a specified training programme over a period of three months and to record this in a training diary. They will be provided with activity trackers and, if necessary, heart rate monitors to assist them. Comprehensive examinations will be carried out in the participating clinics before and after this period.

In order to participate in the study, there must be no other diagnosed cause for the limited exercise capacity and its symptoms. Interested parties who have a pacemaker, are pregnant, have atrial fibrillation or suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are not eligible to participate in the study.

The study is funded by the German Heart Foundation.

Long-/Post-COVID

Long COVID syndrome describes the occurrence of persistent physical, mental and psychological symptoms that occur more than four weeks after a COVID-19 infection and for which there is no other explanation. In post-COVID syndrome, the symptoms persist for more than three months.
