Competencies at a glance: Introduction PJ-e portfolio

23.01.2023 -

The training in the practical year (PJ) of medical studies is of great importance: The PJ marks the transition for the students from predominantly theoretical studies to independent medical work with patients. The introduction of a PJ e-portfolio from the PJ A rotation in November 2023 enables detailed feedback on the individual level of competence and performance and thus supports students in more consciously perceiving and reflecting on their own learning process. In addition to environmental aspects, the digital provision of the portfolio also facilitates availability for the students (always in their pocket) and for the PJ mentors, who can directly access the documents, e.g. in the context of interview preparation.

The introduction of the structured uniform PJ-APT logbooks (APT - entrusted professional activities) with subject-specific adaptations will standardize the PJ content in the future. These will be supplemented by the PJ Primer. This can be used to provide PJ students with relevant hospital-specific information, such as contact persons, processes, structures, clinical pictures and diagnostics.

The PJ-APT logbook serves to document practical and theoretical knowledge gains, encourage self-reflection, structure learning objectives, strengthen student entitlement to training, and create a uniform standard for PJ training within departments.

With the help of the PJ-APT logbooks and regular discussions with the PJ mentors, PJ students should gradually learn to take over and treat their own patients. This makes it possible to structure the path to independent patient care in comprehensible steps.

The entrusted professional activities (APTs) are always structured according to the same pattern: they contain a brief description of the APT with the required supervision levels and the medical knowledge and clinical skills required for successful performance. The concept requires that the PJ students are observed in their actions (structured observation), receive feedback and the learning progress is discussed together in training meetings. On this basis, students can always be assigned further activities depending on the supervision level. They thus form a high quality standard in the practical year.

The introduction of the PJ-e portfolio is planned from the PJ-A rotation in November 2023. An initial information event for PJ managers will be held on February 9, 2023. A training session for all involved is planned for September.
