On April 23, 2026, Magdeburg University Hospital opened its doors to high school students as part of Future Day, offering hands-on insights into the diverse job and career opportunities in the healthcare sector. Through a total of five programs, participants experienced everyday hospital life from various perspectives—ranging from direct patient care and administrative processes to medical research.

Numerous students took part in the programs this year. The goal of this event is to spark an early interest in healthcare professions and provide a realistic impression of the demands and opportunities in this field.

Diverse programs with direct practical relevance

In the program “Nursing, Surgical Technology & Radiology Technology Up Close,” participants gained insights into key areas of patient care. They learned about the duties of nursing staff, gained insight into the work of surgical technicians (OTA), and experienced modern medical technology in radiology.

The program “Therapy Professions: Strong Together for Recovery” demonstrated how physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy work together to support patients on their journey back to everyday life.

Medical research was also brought to life: At the Institute for Molecular and Clinical Immunology in Magdeburg, participants explored the immune system and learned how researchers in the lab are developing new therapies for infections, cancer, and autoimmune diseases.

Another program focused on neuroradiology. Here, participants learned how imaging techniques such as CT and MRI are used and what role they play, for example, in the treatment of strokes. In addition to theoretical basics, the program also included practical exercises.

Under the title “From Purchasing to Dispensing – Your Tour of the UMMD,” the logistical and organizational processes of a hospital were also presented. In addition to a tour of purchasing and warehousing, the students visited the central pharmacy and learned about the importance of a functioning supply chain for patient care.

Early career orientation

With Future Day, Magdeburg University Medical Center underscores its commitment to promoting young talent. Through direct interaction with professionals and hands-on experience on-site, students gain valuable insights for their career orientation.

Nationwide, Future Day is a key initiative for showing young people new perspectives and, in particular, introducing them to career fields that are not typically associated with their gender. Magdeburg University Medical Center has participated in this event for many years and is continuously expanding its offerings.
