Innovation Meets Practice: A Look Back at CFT26 in Magdeburg

01.10.2026 -

We have just concluded three intense, inspiring, and forward-looking days at the 29th Surgical Research Days (CFT26), held under the patronage of the Surgical Research Section of the DGCH (German Society for Surgery). More than 300 experts turned Magdeburg into a hub for interdisciplinary dialogue, and the afterglow is full of energy.

Under the motto “Biomarkers and Technology—Driving Us into the Age of Surgeomics,” one thing became clear: Digitalization and the integration of technology in the operating room have long been standard practice.

Particularly impressive was the genuine collaboration across disciplines: More than ten full professors from surgical departments were on site engaging in direct exchange—supported by strong collaboration among neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery, trauma surgery, cardiac surgery, and pediatric surgery. Sincere thanks go to the respective national professional societies, whose valuable support made this strong foundation possible.

A very special thank you goes to the minds behind the congress’s success:

  • Prof. Dr. med. Roland S. Croner (Congress President): Thank you very much for your visionary leadership, excellent scientific curation, and your tireless commitment to the advancement of our field.
  • Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Ulf D. Kahlert (Congress Secretary) and his entire team: Thank you for your outstanding behind-the-scenes management. Large conferences succeed only through true teamwork—many thanks to the entire organizing team for their excellent collaboration and passionate dedication.

Strong Support from the Region

A heartfelt thank you to Magdeburg’s Mayor Simone Borris, who, through her presence and her words, impressively underscored theinestimable importance of medical research and Magdeburg University Hospital as a driver of innovation for the entire state capital.

What Will We Take Away from CFT26?

Whether it’s robotics, AI-assisted image analysis, or groundbreaking tissue engineering—the enthusiasm, especially among the next generation of scientists, has shown that tomorrow’s surgery will be smarter, more precise, and more interconnected.

Many thanks to all the speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and participants for this wonderful exchange among equals. Let’s work together to build on the connections and ideas we’ve established.
