Mysterious learning in the postpartum period: Exit Game inspires midwifery students

26.02.2026 -

Practical, creative, and with plenty of team spirit: as part of the practical training in the vocational part of the midwifery program, a special learning format took place once again at the University Women's Hospital. Under the title “Mysterious Postpartum Period”, a room in the mother-child ward was transformed into an escape room—with a clear goal: to crack the right code and deepen professional knowledge in the process.

For the second time, Katharina Böttger, the central practical instructor for obstetrics, developed such an exit game for the students. After the successful launch with “Kreißsaal Komplott” (Delivery Room Conspiracy), this time the focus was on the postpartum period.

Learning through experience instead of just listening

First-year students participated – in just their fourth week of practical training. For them, it was their first practical training in this interactive format. Their curiosity and excitement were correspondingly high.

In preparation, there was an introductory day with:

  • theoretical basics of the postpartum period
  • a role-playing game
  • independent study of selected topics, e.g., skin conditions in newborns

This allowed the students to start the actual exit game well prepared.

Six stations – six technical challenges

The escape room scenario consisted of six stations with coordinated content. Each task addressed key competencies in postpartum care:

1. Crossword puzzle on materials for postpartum visits

Review of important utensils and organizational aspects.

2. Examination of the new mother

Assessment: What needs to be observed, what needs to be treated?

3. Examination of the newborn

Recognizing physiological and abnormal findings.

4. Recognizing counseling errors

Raising awareness of typical communication and information errors.

5. Classifying counseling priorities

Prioritizing relevant topics in postpartum care.

6. Defining documentation priorities

What needs to be recorded—and why?

At each station, the students had to collect clues, combine them, and classify them correctly. Only those who understood the content came closer to the numerical code. At the end, the goal was to crack the combination lock and thus “leave” the room.

“It clicks more often”

The students' feedback was consistently positive. The lasting learning effect was particularly emphasized:

"It clicks more often – or: 'Ah, we had that in the exit room the other day!

The playful format made it easier to connect and remember content than through pure theory teaching. The mix of puzzles, teamwork, and practical relevance not only promoted subject knowledge but also communication and clinical thinking.

Added value with a fun factor

In addition to learning success, there was also a small prize at the end: advice booklets for practice – and sweets as a motivating surprise.

The “Mysterious Postpartum Period” impressively demonstrates how innovative teaching formats in midwifery studies can bring theory and practice to life. Especially in the first weeks of practical training, such a concept strengthens confidence, professional competence, and team spirit—and makes it clear that learning can be fun.
