Successful start: First robotic workshop in surgery on the perfused organ

27.08.2024 -

On August 20, 2024, the first robotically assisted workshop in general and visceral surgery took place under realistic conditions at the University Hospital Magdeburg A. ö. R. Under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. Roland Croner and OÄ Dr. Sara Al-Madhi, this one-day workshop offered participants a practical introduction to the innovative world of robotic surgery.

The workshop was aimed in particular at doctors in further training, students of human medicine in their practical year (PJ), surgical assistants and nursing staff. The aim was to familiarize participants with the basics of minimally invasive surgery and offer them the opportunity to get to know robotic support during surgical procedures and to try it out in practice and as a model.

A particular highlight of the workshop was the practical exercise on perfused pig organs, including perfused pig livers. These realistic models enabled the participants to practise techniques such as the open anastomosis technique on intestines and vessels under realistic conditions. The practical orientation of the workshop, including a real “da Vinci surgical robot”, offered participants a unique opportunity to learn about the latest developments in minimally invasive surgery and to expand their knowledge and skills in this area under expert guidance.

“The workshop was a great success and showed how important it is to integrate new technologies into surgical training,” emphasized Dr. Sara Al-Madhi.The participants were also enthusiastic about the opportunities offered by the workshop. The practical exercises in particular were highlighted as a valuable part of the workshop concept and training.

The event marked the start of a series of training courses aimed at continuously developing and expanding specialist knowledge and practical skills in surgical-operative handling as well as minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

The extraordinary success of this first workshop underlines the importance of innovative training formats and lays the foundation for future training courses in the field of practice-oriented and robot-assisted surgery at Magdeburg University Hospital.
