Actors/Actresses: Role-Playing Patients: Wanted

05.08.2022 -

The Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is looking for people who can be trained as acting patients to support medical students in their communication training.

In order to teach key skills such as communication, attitude and empathy in medical studies, the Medical Faculty of Magdeburg is now looking for new acting patients to be used in the training of future doctors. Anyone can participate.

In the acting patient project, medical students learn how to deal with everyday medical situations using simulation patients. Whether it's explaining things to patients at eye level, breaking bad news, or simple admission interviews. Here, many practical things are trained that the young doctors will need in their future professional lives. In contrast to everyday clinical practice, patients can also contribute suggestions for improvement in this project.

As an acting patient, you are trained in advance for a role that you can choose. The training lasts a few days. During this time, you not only learn your role, but also practice how to give feedback to others. The training is free, and the assignments later in the classroom for students are compensated on an hourly basis. The instructor is Dr. Coraline Metzger, head of the Acting Patients Project at the Magdeburg Medical Faculty. She works primarily as a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Magdeburg and is also a trained acting patient trainer. She is supported by Christiane Böhm, who accompanies the project in terms of theater pedagogy. "Previous experience is great, but not necessary to become an acting patient. Age doesn't matter either," explains Dr. Metzger.

The project started in the winter semester 2018/19 with the first students as a pilot project and is now an integral part of medical studies in Magdeburg.

For those interested, information events will be held on August 31 and probably also on September 2, 2022 in the lecture hall in House 4 on the campus of Magdeburg University Medical Center. The events will begin at 10 a.m. each day. Please register in advance by sending an e-mail to .
