Blood donations in Magdeburg: University Hospital and DRK blood donation service cooperate

23.01.2024 -

Blood preparations play an important role in medical treatment.Every year, Magdeburg University Hospital needs over 24,000 different preparations to supply its patients. Donor procurement is complex and the production and laboratory costs are high. In order to ensure that sufficient blood is available for a wide range of therapies in the future, Magdeburg University Hospital and the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service will be working even more closely together.

Up to three different blood preparations are obtained from a whole blood donation (www.blutspende-leben.de/blut-spenden/blut-blutgruppen). The processing procedure is very complex and is subject to strict pharmaceutical regulations. In addition, there is an increasingly fluctuating demand for blood and the very limited shelf life of the blood preparations. For example, the erythrocyte concentrates (red blood cells) produced from whole blood donations only have a shelf life of 49 days.

In order to safeguard supplies and reduce internal costs, Magdeburg University Hospital has decided to expand its existing excellent cooperation with the DRK blood donation service.

In future, the DRK will offer donation appointments in the rooms of the blood bank at Magdeburg University Hospital. Platelet donors will continue to be looked after by Magdeburg University Hospital.

General information on blood donation

Blood donors are "lifesavers". One blood donation can help up to three seriously ill or injured people. A large number of patients owe their lives to strangers who donate their blood voluntarily and selflessly. In addition to accident victims and patients with organ transplants, cancer patients are particularly dependent on blood preparations.

Around 15,000 blood donors are needed every day in Germany. The DRK blood donation services in Germany organize around 43,000 blood donation appointments every year. In accordance with strict ethical standards - voluntary, non-profit and free of charge. On this basis, the DRK covers more than 75 percent of the blood supply in Germany.

In principle, any healthy person over the age of 18 (with full legal capacity) can donate blood at the DRK. Women can donate blood 4 times, men even 6 times within 12 months. There must be an interval of at least 56 days between two blood donations. Blood donors should bring their yellow or digital blood donor pass and an official photo ID with them.
