Insights into modern obesity therapy

University Medicine Magdeburg is holding an information event to mark "World Obesity Day". The dangers of obesity as a chronic disease will be discussed and current therapeutic procedures will be presented.

On Monday, March 4, 2024, an information event will take place on the occasion of World Obesity Day from 5:45 to 8:00 p.m. in the new lecture hall in House 7 on the campus of University Medicine.The multidisciplinary team of the University Clinics for General, Visceral, Vascular and Transplant Surgery with Clinic Director Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Roland S. Croner, of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy with Clinic Director Prof. Dr. med. Florian Junne, of Renal and Hypertensive Diseases, Diabetology, Endocrinology with Clinic Director Prof. Dr. med. Peter R. Mertens, as well as the Medical Care Center in Magdeburg's Altstadtquartier. The event is aimed at those affected and interested as well as general practitioners and doctors working in internal medicine. Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity to ask questions to the experts.

The event can be attended both on site in the new Clinical Lecture Hall House 7, Leipziger Str. 44, 39120 Magdeburg, and online via Zoom.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of obesity as a chronic disease, to help destigmatize it and to highlight the wide range of treatment options available at Magdeburg University Hospital.

The event will begin at 18:00 with a welcome from the hosts. The four specialist lectures that follow will offer a wide-ranging interdisciplinary program with experts from the fields of endocrinology, surgery and psychosomatics. How can chronic obesity be treated? What new nutritional and surgical therapies are available? In addition, psychological and psychosomatic issues will be addressed and an innovative aftercare concept will be presented by experts from the multidisciplinary team.

Background information:

A quarter of the German population lives with morbid obesity, which means an increased risk of serious chronic secondary diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, lung disease, stroke and cancer. In view of the serious health policy and social challenges already posed by obesity, there is an urgent need to improve medical care for those affected. Since 1997, University Medicine Magdeburg has specialized in the treatment of obesity and offers comprehensive medical care for those affected nationwide.
