Background information
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor disease that develops in the cells of the mammary glands or surrounding tissue. It is a form of cancer in which abnormal cells in the breast can grow and multiply uncontrollably.Breast cancer can occur in both women and men, although women are more frequently affected.
Risk factors include genetic predisposition, age, family history of breast cancer, hormone replacement therapy after the menopause, certain genetic mutations and other environmental factors.
Every year, around 70,500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected and treated at an early stage, the chances of recovery are quite good in most cases. Regular check-ups, self-examinations and medical screening measures play a decisive role in the successful treatment of this disease. Treatment can include a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted measures, depending on the type and stage of breast cancer
