Magdeburg University Hospital strengthens care in the Altmark region

19.12.2023 -

The Medical Care Center of Magdeburg University Hospital (MVZ) is expanding its commitment and establishing a new location in Osterburg in the Altmark region. In doing so, Magdeburg University Hospital is sending out an important signal to strengthen medical care in the north of Saxony-Anhalt. "This strategic measure aims to secure outpatient ophthalmological care in the region in the long term and to tackle and sustainably strengthen the challenges of comprehensive care, particularly in the field of ophthalmology," emphasizes Marco Bohn, Commercial Director of the University Hospital A.ö.R.

In order to achieve this, the Medical Care Centre (MVZ) of Magdeburg University Hospital will take over the existing ophthalmology practice of Dipl.-Med. Christiane Kruppke on 1 January 2024. The ophthalmology specialist will continue to be available to her patients together with her team as an employed doctor."The takeover of the practice makes it possible to maintain outpatient ophthalmological care locally and at the same time establish telemedical services in the region. This means that patients in Osterburg can already have access to university care," announces Stephanie Krings, Managing Director of the Medical Care Center Universitätsklinikum Magdeburg gGmbH. Kruppke adds: "I am very much looking forward to working with the MVZ and am proud to be able to continue looking after this location."

Telemedicine solutions are becoming increasingly important for medical care. Dr. med. Lars Choritz is coordinating the establishment of telemedical services in Osterburg together with Prof. Dr. med. Hagen Thieme, Director of the University Clinic for Ophthalmology in Magdeburg. Dr. Choritz works as a senior consultant at the clinic and as part of the "university cross-sector care" project funded by the state.Specific services should be available by the end of 2024. "Efforts have long been made to establish university-based care in the north of Saxony-Anhalt. This step will help to expand medical services and develop innovative approaches for efficient patient care," says Prof. Thieme, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Magdeburg.

Clear guidelines now need to be drawn up to ensure that patients in Osterburg are steered towards telemedical treatment or personal medical care.

Due to the ageing population in Saxony-Anhalt, a restructuring of care is urgently needed. The age pyramid in Saxony-Anhalt must be viewed critically, particularly in terms of outpatient healthcare, as there is already a significant shortage of doctors.

As the project manager of the state-funded project, Magdeburg University Hospital is aiming to provide cross-sectoral university care in the area with this project.Including Osterburg, Magdeburg University Hospital has a total of five locations. This covers a total of 13 specialties.
