Medical Sunday is back on February 4

24.01.2024 -

Magdeburg University Medicine, together with Urania Magdeburg and the Volksstimme newspaper, cordially invites you to another edition of Medical Sunday. This time, the focus will be on "Prostate cancer 2024 - individual diagnosis and customized therapy". The renowned speakers Prof. Dr. med. Martin Schostak, Director of the University Clinic for Urology, Uro-oncology, Robot-assisted and Focal Therapy Magdeburg, and Prof. Dr. med. Michael Kreißl, Chief Physician of the Nuclear Medicine Department of the University Clinic for Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Magdeburg, will provide insights into the clinical picture and present innovative diagnostic and therapeutic options.

The event starts at 10:30 a.m. in University Lecture Hall 1, Building 26 (near the University Library) in Pfälzer Straße. Admission is free. All interested parties, relatives and patients are cordially invited.

The lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the most important aspects of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Prof. Schostak and Prof. Kreißl will highlight those aspects in which the greatest innovations have come to light in recent months.

Innovative machines such as multi-parametric MRI and ultra-high-resolution ultrasound have led to particularly significant advances in early detection. The aim is to avoid unnecessary invasive diagnostics, such as taking samples, or to minimize them to what is absolutely necessary. The lecture explains why a fusion biopsy increases the accuracy and why a so-called focal therapy as an individual therapy concept with the technologies Focal One®, focal brachytherapy and focal laser therapy is particularly gentle.

The event will present current treatment recommendations and explain, for example, why active surveillance is now the preferred method for low-risk cancer. The importance of palpation with the finger in early detection will also be demonstrated. It will also highlight how molecularly targeted imaging, which is also available at Magdeburg University Hospital, can make a valuable contribution to assessing the spread of the disease.

The experts will explain why and when robot-assisted surgery is particularly useful and which radiotherapeutic concepts are currently being used by University Medicine. Prof. Schostak and Prof. Kreißl will present an innovative, molecularly targeted therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer with lymph node metastases - so-called "radioguided surgery". Magdeburg University Hospital is presenting itself as a pioneer in Central Germany in the application of this innovative technology, which uses the key molecule PSMA on the cancer cells to specifically detect radioactively marked lymph node metastases during surgery. This method enables precise removal of the affected lymph nodes and avoids potentially stressful interventions while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue.
