The event starts at 10:30 a.m. in University Lecture Hall 1, Building 26 (near the university library) in Pfälzer Straße. Admission is free. All interested parties, relatives and patients are cordially invited.

The lecture will provide a detailed insight into the key areas of diagnosis and treatment of psychological stress in connection with physical illnesses. In particular, the experts will address those aspects in which significant progress has currently been made.

Physical illnesses can have a significant impact on the psyche of those affected, especially if they take a prolonged or chronic course or are potentially life-threatening, such as cancer. Persistent pain is one of the most common causes of accompanying psychological stress. People suffering from chronic pain can be confronted with depressed mood, sleep disorders, anxiety and severe health worries. It can also be very stressful for patients if no physical cause can be found for persistent symptoms and physical complaints that feel organic. Here too, psychosomatic medicine offers diagnostics, advice and treatment.

Psychosomatic and mental illnesses are widespread, but they are often recognized late. Those affected often hesitate before seeking initial advice, diagnosis or treatment, despite considerable suffering. At the same time, there are often long waiting times for therapy places in the care system. To address this gap in care, the University Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy in Magdeburg expanded its treatment services in summer 2023. In addition to inpatient therapy, day clinic treatment and psycho-oncology, it now also offers an outpatient clinic for diagnostics, counseling and therapy, which the experts will be happy to provide information about.

As part of Medical Sunday, Prof. Junne and his colleagues will present current concepts in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological stress caused by physical illness and chronic pain. These lectures offer an opportunity to learn more about the connections between physical health and mental well-being.

Medical Sunday is an initiative for all interested parties and was made possible by a cooperation between Urania Magdeburg e.V., Volksstimme and Magdeburg University Medicine. In addition to insights into medical topics, the event also offers the opportunity to speak directly with the experts and clarify individual questions.
