30.04.2024 -

The German Society for Muscle Diseases has awarded the Neuromuscular Centre at Magdeburg University Hospital a certificate that is valid until 2026 and attests to the centre's high quality of care.

At the Neuromuscular Centre Magdeburg, neurologists work together on an interdisciplinary basis with experts from the fields of cardiac and pulmonary medicine, human genetics, orthopaedics, rheumatology, dermatology, paediatrics/neuropaediatrics as well as physiotherapists and social workers to care for patients with neuromuscular diseases. Every year, a large number of patients with neuromuscular diseases are treated as inpatients and outpatients at the Department of Neurology at Magdeburg University Hospital. The centre is headed by Prof. Stefan Vielhaber (Head & Spokesperson), Deputy Director of the Department of Neurology, and Prof. Christian Mawrin (Deputy Director), Director of the Institute of Neuropathology. The clinic has its own metabolic laboratory and imaging centre (MRI, sonography). Together with the Institute of Neuropathology, tissue samples (muscle, nerve, skin) are analysed each year and the Institute of Human Genetics, headed by Prof. Martin Zenker, analyses genetic samples and provides counselling services.

The Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases in Magdeburg can look back on a long tradition. In 2008, the facility was one of the first centres in Germany to be certified with the seal of approval of the German Society for Muscular Diseases. For over 30 years, the centre has set itself the goal of ensuring and continuously improving the care of patients with neuromuscular diseases at the highest level. The centre offers comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for patients with neuromuscular diseases. The clinical focus of the Muscle Centre's consultation hours includes the care of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the consultation hours for post-polio syndrome patients and the care of patients with various inflammatory muscle diseases and peripheral neuroimmunological disorders (e.g. myasthenia gravis, chronic inflammatory neuropathies). However, patients with all forms of neuromuscular diseases are generally cared for.

Scientific work in the field of muscle diseases is carried out in close cooperation with other national and international muscle centres over many years.Regular case conferences and further training for doctors and therapists, patients and their relatives round off the services offered by the Competence Centre for Muscle Diseases. The Magdeburg Muscle Centre cooperates closely with the Central German Competence Network for Rare Diseases (MKSE) at Magdeburg University Hospital.Founded in 2014, the MKSE aims to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in the field of rare diseases, for example through monthly case conferences and a doctor acting as a guide who processes and forwards patient enquiries so that patients with neuromuscular diseases can also come to the muscle consultation in this way.Referrals are also made by specialists in private practice and clinics in the surrounding area.
