Neuroscientist at Magdeburg University Medical Center helps decide on cutting-edge research in Germany

29.01.2024 -

Prof. Dr. Daniela Dieterich, Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, has been elected to the Senate Committee for Collaborative Research Centres (SFB) by the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Over the next three years, she will contribute her expertise in the field of neuroscience and is therefore jointly responsible for the evaluation and selection of Collaborative Research Centers that receive public funding. The DFG is the largest research funding organization and central self-governing institution for science in Germany.

Collaborative Research Centers (SFB) are long-term research facilities at universities in which scientists work together across disciplinary boundaries in an excellent research program. These are awarded according to strict quality criteria and international standards and mean a considerable increase in positions and funding for the respective research area for the universities.

As a member of the Senate Committee for Collaborative Research Centres, Prof. Dr. Daniela Dieterich also plays a role on the Grants Committee for Collaborative Research Centres. Her tasks include participating in inspections of Collaborative Research Centers and submitting well-founded assessments of the applications submitted. In this role, she is currently the only scientist from Saxony-Anhalt on this committee.

After graduating, she began her doctoral studies in the Department of Neurochemistry at the Leibniz Institute of Neurobiology (LIN) in Magdeburg. She was then a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute for Technology, Division of Biology, funded by the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

In 2008, she was accepted into the Emmy Noether Program of the German Research Foundation and founded an independent junior research group at LIN.Since 2012, she has headed the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and is still associated with the LIN.She has held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Magdeburg since 2020. The neuroscientist is co-speaker of the DFG Research Training Group "SynAGE - The Ageing Synapse" and part of the speaker team of the Center for Behavioral Brain Sciences (CBBS). From 2020 to 2024 she was already a review board member of the German Research Foundation in the field of Molecular Biology and Physiology of Nerve and Glial Cells.
