New Clinic Director of the University Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine in Magdeburg

28.03.2024 -

Prof. Dr Martin Durisin brings extensive expertise in ENT medicine and tumour surgery to Magdeburg.

From 1 April 2024, Prof. Martin Durisin will take over the position of Director and Chair of the University Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine and Head and Neck Surgery at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. The 48-year-old previously worked as Deputy Clinic Director and Senior Consultant at Hannover Medical School. Since November 2022, he had already been acting Head of the ENT Clinic in Magdeburg and was responsible for patient care, research and teaching.

The ear, nose and throat specialist has many years of clinical experience and specialised expertise in the fields of head and neck tumour surgery, plastic-reconstructive surgery and tracheal surgery. His clinical specialisations also include otology and neurootology, including implantology and skull base surgery. He also holds additional qualifications in allergology and plastic surgery. In Hanover, Prof. Durisin headed the tumour team for over a decade and coordinated the Head and Neck Tumour Centre.

Prof Durisin explains: "It is a great pleasure for me to continue my work at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and to contribute to the development of ENT medicine. The excellent interdisciplinary collaboration on campus and the outstanding framework conditions offer unique opportunities for innovation and growth in patient care, research and teaching. University Medicine Magdeburg is therefore a reliable partner for colleagues in order to ensure the holistic care of our joint patients at the highest level."

His scientific focus is on auditory neuroprosthetics and chronic inflammation as the core of immunologically driven diseases. In Magdeburg, he plans to establish research projects to develop cell-based and gene therapy approaches for hearing rehabilitation and to influence the neuroplasticity of the brain. "As Clinic Director, I will be particularly committed to research activities in the field of translational research. The aim is to incorporate new findings directly into patient care." He goes on to emphasise: "The excellent research infrastructure and strong cooperation partners on site offer ideal conditions for innovative approaches in medical research."

In the field of cochlear implantation, Prof Durisin is currently researching the development of stable electrode parameters for neural stimulation and the evaluation of the interface between the electrode and perilymph. By systematically analysing the physical and biological influences, he aims to identify the causes of poor hearing with cochlear implants. In addition, in vitro cell culture models of spiral ganglion cells are being carried out. The long-term goal is to develop a closed-loop system that adapts the electrical stimulation with a cochlear implant to the local conditions.

After one and a half years at Magdeburg University Hospital, the new Clinic Director summarises: "I have found a wonderful place to live and work in the clinic, in Magdeburg and the region, and I am optimistic about the future."
