New President of the Scientific Organization ECDO

16.06.2022 -

Prof. Dr. Inna N. Lavrik is a renowned expert in the field of inflammation research and programmed cell death.

Biologist Prof. Dr. Inna Lavrik has been elected as the new president of the European Cell Death Organization (ECDO). The organization brings together more than 200 internationally renowned scientists who conduct research in the field of cell death (apoptosis). Malfunctions in apoptosis are characteristic of various diseases such as autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammation and cancer.

Prof. Lavrik has been a member of the ECDO, founded in 1994, since 2013 and brings extensive experience and knowledge in this field of research to her new role. Since 2012, she has been the Professor of Translational Inflammation Research at the Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and part of the Dynamic Systems Research Center (CDS) at the University of Magdeburg. Previously, she worked at the German Cancer Research Center Heidelberg (DKFZ) for twelve years. In recent years, Prof. Lavrik's research group has produced significant and important research results in understanding the regulation of the "death receptor" CD95, opening up new perspectives for the development of therapeutic drugs, especially for the treatment of cancer. "Cell death research is one of the most innovative areas of biomedicine and provides the basis for further progress in the field of translational medicine and, building on this, drug development," explains Prof. Lavrik.

From September 26 to 29, 2022, international experts will present new and partly unpublished findings on cell death research at the annual ECDO conference under the motto "Inflammation links neurodegeneration and cancer". The meeting will take place at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Bonn and will be organized, among others, by the working group "Translational Inflammation Research" headed by Prof. Lavrik.
