Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSAS) is a serious breathing disorder that occurs repeatedly during sleep. It leads to a reduction or complete cessation of breathing due to constriction of the throat. These pauses in breathing can occur several hundred times a night and last for minutes. The collapse in the upper respiratory tract leads to a drop in the oxygen concentration in the blood. As a result, the affected person wakes up again and again and is therefore unable to have a restful sleep. The typical symptoms of OSAS include loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, headaches in the morning and difficulty concentrating and even depressive moods.
