Orthopaedic University Hospital sets standards with arthroplasty courses to optimise patient care

26.03.2024 -

The Orthopaedic University Clinic at Magdeburg University Hospital has successfully organised two highly specialised courses in the field of knee arthroplasty together with the German Arthroplasty Association. The courses offer a unique opportunity to improve the quality of care in arthroplasty.

The German Arthroplasty Association, a leading scientific organisation in the field of arthroplasty in Germany, is committed to the further training of doctors working in this field. The Orthopaedic University Hospital participates in this mission and makes a decisive contribution to the further development of this important medical speciality.

The basic course in knee arthroplasty offered participants both theoretical instruction and practical workshops on artificial bones with implants. The aim was to improve knowledge and skills in the primary implantation of knee endoprostheses. The master's course in knee revision arthroplasty brought together lecturers and participants from all over Germany to address the increasing number of replacement operations required in cases of loosening, infection, instability and periprosthetic fractures and to develop solutions. The organisation of the courses marks an important step in the continuous effort to improve the quality of care for patients with joint diseases.

Prof Christoph Lohmann, MD, Director of the Orthopaedic University Clinic, expressed his satisfaction with the successful implementation of the courses: "I am very pleased that my colleagues from Magdeburg and throughout Germany were able to contribute as speakers to imparting the high level of knowledge in primary arthroplasty and knee revision arthroplasty. These courses will help to further improve the quality of care for our patients."

Every year, over 200,000 hip and 200,000 total knee arthroplasties are implanted in Germany. The revision of total knee endoprostheses reached a rate of around 23,000 in 2022.
