Successful removal of a 32 kg tumor at the University Women's Hospital Magdeburg

03.01.2024 -

Under the expert guidance of Prof. Dr. med. Atanas Ignatov, the team at Magdeburg University Women's Hospital removed a 32 kg tumor from the ovaries of a 24-year-old patient.

The benign tumor, a cystadenoma, had developed unnoticed over a long period of time. The young woman finally sought help at the University Women's Hospital Magdeburg due to health problems caused by the tumor, including shortness of breath, a feeling of heaviness and weight loss due to restricted food intake caused by the size of the tumor. After extensive diagnostics, it was determined that the tumor had grown to a considerable size and needed to be removed urgently to prevent further health complications.

During the operation, which was performed by a highly qualified team under the direction of Prof. Dr. med. Atanas Ignatov, it was discovered that the tumor already had adhesions to the intestine and abdominal mesh. Despite everything, the operation was successful and without complications. The 32 kg tumor was completely removed. The patient left the clinic after just one week.

Prof. Dr. med. Atanas Ignatov commented after the operation: "A tumor of this size is extremely unusual, as women usually seek medical help at an early stage. The patient was afraid of the operation and therefore suppressed the tumor, but I would like to emphasize: Affected women should not be afraid. They are in the best hands with us. Our clinic is geared towards providing highly specialized medical assistance. Early detection is the key to successful treatment and we support our patients in this important aspect of preventive healthcare."

The University Women's Hospital Magdeburg offers a wide range of medical services and continuously pursues innovative approaches in gynecology. The successful removal of this exceptionally large tumor is yet another example of the excellence provided at the clinic.
