With a medical test to your dream degree programme in Magdeburg

04.03.2024 -

Once again this year, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is offering prospective students the opportunity to take the HAM-Nat science test to gain admission to medical school. Over 600 prospective students took advantage of this opportunity and took part in this selection process at the test location in Magdeburg on 1 and 2 March 2024 to increase their chances of gaining a place to study medicine.

The HAM-Nat, short for "Hamburg Selection Procedure for Medical Degree Programmes", has been used at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg since 2012. The procedure makes it possible for applicants to gain admission to a medical degree programme even without an A-level by offsetting the result of the test against the A-level grade. In addition to Magdeburg, the HAM-Nat is also used at other universities such as Hamburg and Greifswald, sometimes in combination with other test procedures.

"The HAM-Nat is an important tool for us to promote the diversity of prospective doctors in medical studies and to enable talented applicants to gain access to medical training even without top grades," emphasises Dean Prof. Dr Daniela C. Dieterich.

The test comprises science questions from the medically relevant basic subjects of biology, chemistry and physics as well as the "figural matrices" and "arithmetic problem solving" sections. After the evaluation, participants receive a certificate that can be used to apply to the Foundation for University Admissions and is also valid for the following year.

Background

The allocation of study places for human medicine is based on a quota model in which the selection test is taken into account as part of the "university selection procedure" (AdH) and as a selection criterion in the "additional aptitude quota" (ZEQ, formerly waiting time quota). This quota exclusively utilises aptitude criteria independent of school grades. In Saxony-Anhalt, study places are also awarded via a "rural doctor quota" and, since 2022, via an "official doctor quota" to applicants who commit to working as a doctor in Saxony-Anhalt for ten years after completing their studies and further training. A total of 196 study places are available at the Magdeburg Medical Faculty for the winter semester 2024/25.
